Women's Swim and Dive Team new at University of West Florida

ESCAMBIA COUNTY   --  Most of us who live here on the gulf coast grow up with swim lessons..
Now, a new sports team at the University of West Florida is giving students a chance to use their aquatic skills.

"The University of West Florida has been making sports headlines lately.  Baseball, soccer and now a potential football team.  But there's one new team on campus this year who's ready to make a big splash."

The inaugural season for the UWF Women's Swim and Dive Team is about to get underway.
It's something the team and coach are ready for...

Andrew Hancock/UWF Head Swimming Coach
"It's very very unique.  Not a lot of people can say they were able to put together the first group.  And that's something the athlete's share as well.  They're just really excited to begin new traditions and build upon all that sort of stuff."

The team is made up of swimmers from as far away as Germany.
Anna-Marie Macht/Jr., Germany
"I just really like the fact that we would be the first team who could represent the school for the first time.  The campus is beautiful, the pool is beautiful, I love it here."

And from right here along the gulf coast.
Cheryl Corvo/Sr., Fort Walton Beach
"Just being a part of this team, it's like home to me."

Their first meet ever will be at UWF, taking on teams from Florida State and Tulane.  Coach Hancock says they're ready for the challenge.

"Not only is it going to show us where we're at and give us a good test, but for the people who want to come and watch the meet it will give them a really good showcase for the sport and really let them see what it can look like at the highest level."

Even though the season hasn't begun, the team is expecting big things.
"We don't know each other that well, yet, but we I think we will be great together."

"I think we're going to do awesome."
"The sky's the limit I think for this program."

"The first meet is scheduled for Friday, October 11th at 1:00 pm and they need you to come fill these stands and show the team that you're here to support them.
