How Obamacare will effect restaurant owners

By 2014 every American, with very few exceptions, will have to have some form of health insurance or be fined.

How Obamacare will affect area businesses.
The Affordable Healthcare Act is suppose to make things easier for hospitals and other health clinic but area business owners say the changes will make things more difficult when it comes to their bookkeeping.

The idea behind Obamacare is that more healthy people will buy insurance, and the money the insurance companies save on them will cover the costs of insuring the older and sicker people who will now be in the insurance system.

Employers will provide insurance for three out of every five Americans in 2014, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Another 12% get it through Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance program.

But for people without insurance, October 1 will be the first time they will be able to shop for private insurance in health insurance marketplaces, also known as exchanges.

Several area restaurants say they've done their research and believe they are prepared even though they don't completely agree with the new system.

Chase Cole- General Manager, Flounders
"We used to have a 20 hour minimum. The new law requires 30 hour minimum so it may be harder for some people who normally weren't allowed to get insurance because they have to work more or be full time employees rather than part time to qualify for healthcare through the restaurant."

Jerry , Jerry Cajun Cafe
"People are going to hire less employees so you have more unemployment and if they are going to be part time. I've got 20 and I'm trying to say below 50 for sure cause I could not stay in business if I had 50 or more."

December 14 is the cut-off date if you want your health insurance plan to start January 1."
