Perdido Key erosion
PERDIDO KEY -- Sections of Perdido Key are critically eroded.
Erosion is endangering properties and the economy.
Tonight county commissioners will talk about how to fix the problem.
This is the erosion that we are talking about. Im here at Johnson Beach. And the drop off here is about 3 feet.
The east side of Perdido Key, from Johnson Beach to Perdido Key State Park, has been designated as critically eroded by the state of Florida. The plan is to pump in more than one million cubic feet of sand from a "borrow site" two miles off shore.
Thursday night is the next step in the process. Commissioners will submit an application for funds from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. That money will be used to help pay for the beach nourishment. The planning for this project has been difficult and hasn't come without a few set-backs. More than two million dollars had to be given back to the department of environmental protection... Because other parts of the planning process hadn't been completed in time. Residents and visitors say they see the need for action.
This project is important because should a hurricane hit, condo owners and the local economy could be in big trouble. The construction for the project is set to begin in the fall of 2015.
