Silver Screen Theater announces closing

PENSACOLA -- A movie theater that provided a unique experience in Pensacola has closed its doors for good. The Silver Screen Theater near University Mall made the announcement on Facebook yesterday.
For more than 30 years you could drink a beer, eat a meal and watch a movie all right here at the Silver Screen Theater.
Former Patron Angelia Byers said, "Ooh, Im sad."
Angelia Byers has some fond memories of the Silver Screen.
Byers said, "We came and saw rocky horror picture show here and i was a regular. It was a good place to come. You could sit and eat and relax."
Byers is not alone. Elden Scott says in addition to the pizza, hamburgers and full bar, he's going to miss the laid back vibe.
Former Patron, Elden Scott said, The seats are more spacious and you have the table, you can eat your food. You have somewhere to sit. Instead of holding your popcorn you can have somewhere to set your stuff."
The problem the theater was facing is one independently-owned cinemas across the country are dealing with. Unlike the big multiplexes, the silver screen was still using 35 millimeter projectors.
But after December, Hollywood Studios have promised to stop releasing movies on film and instead put them out only in a digital format. Some say that move is bringing about the end of an era.
Scott said, "Small business is the backbone of our community. When we're having these big corporations come in, that's all we have, since the conversion to digital was not financially feasible, the ownership decided to close the business.
