And now the man who held three women for years against their will, is dead.
How did this happen?
A shocking end to a horrific crime story. Ariel Castro - convicted and sentenced last month to life in prison, plus a thousand years, for holding three Cleveland women hostage for a decade - has been found dead.
Ohio prison officials say Castro was found hanged in his cell last night - an apparent suicide.
The correctional facility's medical staff tried to resuscitate Castro,
But the 52-year-old convicted kidnapper and rapist was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Castro's attorney says his client was in protective custody because of the notoriety of his case - but not on suicide watch. He was kept in isolation and checked on every 30 minutes
Abrams: Protective custody is supposed to protect him from other inmates. Suicide watch is to protect him from himself.
And it seems that he was not on suicide watch.
And there are gonna be a lot of questions as to why.
What does that mean when you're on suicide watch?
It means you don't have shoelaces, you don't have other items you could use to hang yourself.
The former school bus driver entered a guilty plea last month.
Judge: So you understand you will be in prison for life. You don't even have the expectation or the hope of getting out is that clear?
Ariel Castro: I do understand that your honor
Castro confessed to kidnapping Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina Dejesus and imprisoning them in his Cleveland home. He was convicted on 937 counts including kidnapping, rape, assault and aggravated murder. The plea deal spared Castro the death penalty.

We heard from Gina Dejesus' family this morning her brother says the family has heard of Castro's apparent suicide and they are all doing "Okay."
