Highway 30A repairs in Walton County

WALTON COUNTY - It collapsed two and a half weeks ago. Part of Highway 30-A in Walton County buckled....after heavy rain drenched the area back on August 18th.

County leaders said the road could be closed for months. Then suddenly this week, repairs began. Some people are giving the credit to part-time resident....and former Presidential candidate....Mike Huckabee.

Reporter Laura Hussey says, "The last time we showed you this sretch of Walton County 30-A, this big expanse of sand was a big crater in the road. At that point, the timeline for having the road open again was spring of 2014."

In the last three weeks, lunch business at Marie's Bistro dropped eighty percent. Owner Hanie Nasri says the road closure was devastating.....and there was no end in sight.

Nasri says, "I had a chill come down my whole body. Did not know what are we going to do"

Nasri says the community banded together to fight for help. That's where Mike Huckabee comes in. The commentator and former Presidential candidate keeps a home in Blue Mountain Beach. Locals speak of him protectively, and fondly.

Nasri says, "He is an amazing person The whole family. He....when you see MIke Huckabee, you feel right away like you're part of his family"

People believe Huckabee made some well-placed phone calls to get the repairs started. A county spokesperson says he knows nothing about that. A spokesperson for Congressman Jeff Miller says the same thing. Huckabee didn't get back with us, but he seemed to spill the beans to the local paper, saying "I doubt I did much"

Adam Ferguson of Santa Rosa Beach says, "Well if he can help get the thing opened up, that's a great help to the community, a great help for all these businesses"

Nasri is thankful to any and all who helped speed up the repairs. As for Huckabee, he says Blue Mountain Beach is lucky to have him.

Nasri says, "I would have been happier to see him in the White House, but he loves this house, and it is way better than the White House, in my opinion"

Laura Hussey says, "If the repairs go as planned, County Road 30-A will be open by the end of next week."
