Okaloosa increases security at elementary schools
Next week students in Okaloosa County will go back to school and law enforcement and school leaders want to make sure they return to safe campuses.
Today, the "Young Lawyers Division" of the Okaloosa Bar Association met with school leaders and Okaloosa deputies to talk about safety.
In January Sheriff Larry Ashley put resource officers in every elementary school in the district.
He says, they've seen a significant increase in the number of reports filed for child abuse and child neglect.
Sheriff Ashley wants to continue to take preventative steps to ensure students' safety.
"When they step off that bus in the morning, or get out of that car and walking into that school...they become my responsibility...our responsibility."
To help make sure Resource Officers have the training and tools they need, there will be a benefit concert later this month.
The "Stand Up For Safety In Our Schools" event will be held on Saturday, August 24th, at 7 pm at the Emerald Coast Convention Center
