New toll in Okaloosa County

A new road in Okaloosa County will give people a fast track to Destin but some drivers say it's not worth the money it will cost them to use it.

The mid bay connector bridge will connect highway 85 to the Mid Bay Bridge. Once the bridge is completed drivers will be able to avoid 14 traffic lights on highway 20 in Niceville saving time on their commute.
There will be a toll on the connector which has drivers saying they plan to boycott the new bridge.

"I think it's ridiculous. I will avoid the toll and probably not get on it and find another way to go," said Carrie Beth Foley.

Right now drivers pay $3 if they pay in cash to travel the Mid Bay Bridge. The toll booth on the connector will be electronic and drivers with a sun pass will only pay a dollar. The new toll by plate program takes a picture of your license plate and an invoice is sent through the mail. Drivers could potentially pay $9 round trip.

"It's unbelievable what they charge to go across these bridges. It's getting to where you can't afford to go anywhere."

There will be exits placed on the connector so drivers could go around the toll booth. There are also other routes beside the two tolled bridges to avoid the tolls.
The connector project should be completed by spring of 2014.
