Gulf Breeze City Council want Milage rate increase

GULF BREEZE   --  The Gulf Breeze City Council wants to raise the milage rate/property tax on its residents.

Since 2011, Gulf Breeze milage rate has been 1.9 %.
The new proposal calls for an increase to 2.1 %.

That could mean an increase of about 40 dollars for a 200,000 dollar home.

Dee Burns has lived in her Gulf Breeze home for 40-years.
She says she understands in order to keep her community nice, she may have to pay a little more in property taxes.

"Unless we maintain, it's going to cost us more, it's the old Stitch in Time theory"

The Gulf Breeze City Council wants to raise the milage rate by .2 %.
City leaders say the property tax increase is needed, to keep up with the increased cost of city services like road improvements and the police department.

Doug Hadden - Gulf Breeze Resident
"Gulf Breeze is a great place to live, Sue and I feel very secure in Gulf Breeze, we enjoy their parks immensely."

Doug Hadden has lived in his home for 11 years.
He's seen his property taxes fluctuate but he says they're still reasonable.
"If we can keep the taxes modest, then I can probably go for a rate increase at this point."

Last year Doug paid about 1400 dollars in property taxes.
For him, paying a little more won't be much of a problem, but he understands to some of his neighbors, especially those on a fixed income, every penny counts.

"A lot of retirees live in here, that are on fixed income so I can't speak for everyone but a lot of my neighbors are well enough that they can handle an increase I think."
