Obama awards Medal of Honor to soldier
President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to an Army soldier for going above the call of duty during his service in Afghanistan.
Staff Sergeant Ty Michael Carter became the fifth living recipient to be awarded the nation's highest military decoration.
The army says in 2009 Carter was under intense fire when he killed enemy troops, provided first aid, and risked his life to save an injured soldier.
Carter was joined by 40 members of his family at the White House ceremony, including his wife and three children.
"They are a family forged in battle and loss and love, so today is something of a reunion. And we come together again with gratitude and pride to bestow the Medal of Honor."
Carter was diagnosed with PTSD and says he hopes to use the honor to help other soldiers who suffer from it by motivating them to get help.
