Update: Supplemental Snapper Season

NEW ORLEANS   -- Anglers could get another red snapper season this fall.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council voted to increase the red snapper quota for the year  from eight and a half million pounds to eleven million pounds.
They expect to open a "Supplemental Season" on October 1st.
Area charter boat captains say it's good news to them and the local economy because it would bring in more tourists, who  will stay at the hotels and eat at the restaurants.

"So many people will not go fishing unless they can catch red snapper since the snapper season was so short in June"
That extra season could be as long as 21 days.
But  how many days will depend on the final numbers from the summer season.

And those come out next month.
