Sheriff's office investigates overnight shooting

ESCAMBIA COUNTY -- The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney's office are investigating a late night shooting involving Escambia County sheriff deputies -- a shooting that left one man in the hospital -- and a Pensacola neighborhood on edge.
Crime scene tape had parts of Shadow Lawn Lane blocked off for nearly six hours after a man was shot by sheriff deputies.
Neighbor Sam Barton said, "I thought it was firecrackers, my girlfriend didn't, then we jumped up to look out the window and saw deputies carrying shotguns and stuff.”
Sam Barton lives next door to the man shot at by Escambia County sheriff deputies. Bullets holes left behind after the shooting, can still be seen in the car parked in the driveway. One of the neighbors called Escambia County the sheriff's office after they thought someone was trying to steal from a vehicle.
"The police had followed him, they thought he had stole the car and it's actually his mother's car and he's licensed to drive that vehicle,” Barton said.
When deputies arrived, two of them fired their guns on the person they had suspicions about. Sam says he had no idea his neighbor, who he describes as kind and easy going guy, was the intended target.
"I don't know what happen before the gun shots but I just know after the gun shots he was laying over there and his car door was still open,” Barton said.
A few doors down, Cathy Weyburn was also shaken up by the shooting. She says she's lived in the area for 18 years, and things are usually quiet.
Neighbor Cathy Weyburn said, “It makes you kind of leery, it makes you want to keep your doors locked and we don't.”
The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
