Local unemployment is up

Unemployment in May inched up in Escambia County, from 6.4 percent the previous month to 6.7 percent, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

Santa Rosa County's jobless rate stayed steady at 5.9 percent, the lowest monthly rate in more than five years.

Statewide, unemployment in May was 7.1 percent, bettering the national rate of 7.3 percent.
While the Escambia-Santa Rosa rates are among the lowest since early 2008, there are still 13,800 people out of work in the two-county area. However, that's down from a high of nearly 22,000 in late 2009 and early 2010.
