Officials say firefighters hard work paying off

COLORADO -- The wildfire near Colorado Springs has left two people dead hundreds of homes destroyed and more than 15 thousand acres burned.

Firefighters' progress against the fire has been slow and dangerous but fire officials say the hard work is paying off.

The Incident Commander says the fire is now 65 percent contained, though there are still a lot of small fires burning in the area.

"Firefighters in the field are doing a real good job at hitting those hot spots, really starting to engage in what they call creating hash marks.  Taking each property putting out stumps, putting out little brush fires, a lot of coordination between law enforcement and local fire districts as well as the national resources that have been brought in,” said the Incident Commander.
