FOLLOW-UP Pace fire destroys home

PACE   --  The State Fire Marshall is working to determine what started a fire that  destroyed a Pace family's home.

It happened early Sunday morning, on University Street and Safehaven Lane.
The fire completely burned through the home.  There's nothing left but the frame.
And now we're learning a little more about what happened that night.

Charred wood...
A warped roof...
And blackened walls remind neighbors like Rudolph Barnhill, that disaster can strike at any hour.

On Sunday morning it struck around 1 am to the people living next door.

Rudolph Barnhill, Neighbor
It's a mother, a boy friend, a daughter and her boy friend.

None were home at the time.
But came home in time to watch the flames devour their home.

Rudolph Barnhill, Neighbor
They came knocking on my door to ask for help to call the fire department
My wife called 911 and as I looked out the door I could see smoke coming out the top of the house.

They were hollering, 'I need to get my dogs out, I need to get my dogs out!' and I said don't worry about the dogs, worry about yourself you can't go back into the house.'

The family had three dogs.
None made it out.
The fire marshall's office suspects the fire started next to the laundry room.

But a cause has not been determined.
Danielle McEachern lives in the street behind these seared home remains.
She wonders what sparked the fire.  She knew one of the women who lived here.

She was a cool neighbor, she hung out a lot.  She like kicked it back in high school.  We don't talk as much as we used to but she's a cool girl

Rudolph Barnhill, Neighbor
We've always enjoyed them as a neighbor.  They've been always been helpful whatever we could do to help them and whatever they could do to help me. we've always done it.

For now the family is staying with friends until figure out what to do next.
