Latest crime numbers show violent crime up in NW Florida

FLORIDA -- The latest crime numbers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement show that the rate of violent crime is up in Northwest Florida.

The violent crime rate went up by more than 12 percent from 2011 to 2012. In Santa Rosa County that number went up by 9 percent. In Okaloosa County, it went up by more than 11 percent.

Family members of violent crime victims tell us they don't feel that the area has gotten more dangerous, but they say they would like to see those numbers go down.

"I really think it's the mindset of the young people how they think needs to change," said Lavon Brown, a shooting victim's mother.

"We're trying to stop they cycle by trying to come together as one," said Linda Montgomery, another victim's mother.

So far this year there has been one homicide in Pensacola and seven in Escambia County.
