Crestview 5th graders involved in bus accident in Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS -- A tour bus carrying students from Crestview's Walker Elementary was involved in an accident on I-10 near New Orleans on Thursday, resulting in the death of a person in a different vehicle. No students were reported with any injuries.

The driver of the tour bus said a car lost control and went into the westbound lanes where the school bus struck it. The bus then went off the road and into nearby woods and water. The adults on the bus and the approximately 25 students were forced to evacuate through its rear door due to the water near the front of the bus.

The bus was one of three on its way to a zoo in New Orleans as part of a field trip. According to the Okaloosa County Schools Deputy Superintendent, the Crestview students will continue their visit to the zoo, then will stay in a hotel overnight and return home Friday.

Traffic was temporarily closed on I-10 westbound, in the area between US 11 and the Michoud Exit (Exit 248).
