Crestview leaders want to change development plan for downtown
CRESTVIEW -- Crestview's Main Street District is a charming downtown, but after 5 pm it practically shuts down.
City leaders want to change that by allowing people to live as well as work on Main Street.
Laura Hussey "We're on Main Street in downtown Crestview. Have a look at this building behind me. there's some space for lease upstairs. The way the rules are written now, you could only put a business in there, but the city wants to change that"

Viola Owens/Cview Main Street "I don't know if you know it or not, but the upstairs of Desi's Restaurant right on the corner down here was at one time a hotel"
The city has applied for a grant to rewrite its development plan, allowing the second and third floors of downtown buildings to be used as residences.
Sarah/Journey Java Connection "On one hand I think it would be good because it could potentially get more people to Main Street"
At Journey Java Connection Sarah Hawkins says downtown could use the traffic, especially in the evening.
Sarah "On the other hand, I'd want to make sure the people living there were classy and they didn't do anything bad to give Main Street a bad name"
Sarah and Manager Sandra Peters say upstairs apartments would be a boon for Florida A&M Pharmacy students, who could live close to their school.
Peters has no reservations at all.
Sandra Peters/Journey Java Connection "I think the more that we can make the downtown a community, and it only becomes a community when people are living in it"
Laura Hussey "Crestview's mayor tells me that taking downtown in this direction is so important that even if they don't et the grant, he'll find a way to get the project done.
