Local stores celebrate Record Store Day

ESCAMBIA CO., Fla. -- From California to New York to right here in Pensacola, music fans celebrated Record Store Day.

Record Store Day, created in 2008, celebrates vinyl records; a music format that was almost killed off by CDs and mp3s but has been rediscovered in the past few years.

But more importantly, it promotes independently owned retailers.

Today over 700 stores participate, including four stores in Escambia County.

Collectors say there's more to shopping at local stores than just buying records.

"You can go online and find just about whatever you can but it's much better to go into somewhere and talk personally. I guess it's just more of that social aspect to it that really is important," said Carson Greenway.

This year's Record Store Day featured special releases from dozens of artists including Bob Dylan, Randy Travis and Willie Nelson.
