Congress returns from recess, gun control high on agenda

Congress is returning Monday from a two-week recess with gun control high on the Senate's agenda.

Senators could start debating Democratic-written gun legislation before week's end.

But leaders might also decide to give negotiators more time to make a deal on expanding background checks for those buying firearms.

Expanded background checks would be viewed as a victory for gun control advocates.

The issue is a priority for President Barack Obama since the Sandy Hook school shooting in December.

The National Rifle Association opposes both the assault weapons ban and the expanded background checks.
