Check charity with IRS before taking deduction on taxes
If you donated to charities in support of Superstorm Sandy victims or the families of Sandy Hook you may not get the tax write-off you were expecting.
It turns out, a number of the charities were not legit and the IRS doesn't offer deductions to phony organizations.
If the IRS catches a taxpayer deducting a donation to a non-eligible organization, the filer has to pay a penalty and any unpaid taxes, as well as interest.
So if you want that deduction, check the IRS search tool before handing over any money.
