Escambia County control burn gets out of control Thursday

ESCAMBIA CO., Fla. -- A prescribed burn near Saufley field could continue Friday.

Strong winds caused the controlled burn to get out of control Thursday that resulted in about 340 acres being burned. A helicopter was brought in to drop water on the flames. Fire fighters were able to get the fire under control, but thick smoke lingered in several neighborhoods throughout the evening.

"It was very smokey, you could see ash falling from the sky," said Steffanie Latuch, Escambia County resident.

The burn could continue today depending on the weather. No homes or businesses were threatened.
