UPDATE: ECSO Officer condition upgraded to "fair" after shooting

ESCAMBIA CO., Fla. -- Escambia County sheriff's deputy Sgt. Shedrick Johnson was shot in the leg Wednesday night when he responded to a burglary call in the Scenic Hills area Wednesday night.

Johnson was released from surgery Thursday morning and had his condition upgraded to 'fair' from 'serious' later in the day.

Two suspects are in custody in relation to the incident, including Keenan Ross Finkelstein, 23, who has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer. Jonathan Brett Chappell, 24, was also arrested in connection with an earlier alleged robbery at a Tom Thumb on Pensacola Blvd.

Local members of law enforcement have shown massive support for their brother in blue. Several Escambia County Sheriff's Office marked vehicles could be found in the Sacred Heart Hospital parking lot outside the Trauma Center Thursday morning where Johnson was recovering from his wound.

The neighborhood where the scene took place was temporarily closed off as police investigated the area Wednesday night. Neighbors were stunned at the buzz of activity. "We heard something like fireworks and then we looked outside, saw ten to fifteen cop cars racing down the road chasing guy out of a house, then put him on the ground," said neighbor Trey Kramer.

According to Officer Down Memorial Page, a website dedicated to memorializing fallen police officers, 22 officers from across the country have died in the line of duty.
