ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Pentagon delays furlough notices
WASHINGTON -- Furlough notices for thousands of defense workers have been postponed for at least a couple of weeks.
Thursday, congress passed a bill to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.
Defense leaders say they're taking extra time to analyze how that legislation might affect the furloughs.
Furlough notices will now be mailed around April 5.
Putting off the furloughs isn't easing worries about their impact.
Laura Hussey "Webb's Transmission and Automotive is like lots of small businesses trying to find ways to adapt in a tough economy. With thousands of defense workers in the area facing a twenty percent pay cut, uncertainty is everywhere"
The Pentagon's plan calls for 22 unpaid days off between now and October.
Nikki Webb/Webb's Transmission "Twenty percent! When you figure how much we're already paying in taxes this year just on our regular income...a twenty percent pay cut you can't hardly make it through the day"
At Joey Tomato's in Niceville, they're already seeing less defense workers in the lunch crowd.
Christopher Cartenuto "It's tough. A lot of folks are kind of unsure what they're going to be doing. Folks that have had kind of long-term contractor and military careers looking for second jobs, and folks coming in here looking for extra work"
Postponing the thirty-day notice means the pentagon is pushing the furloughs back by at least two weeks.
Trauma intervention volunteer Bonnie Hutton says the delay is making a stressful situation even more difficult.
Bonnie Huton/Niceville "Even if it's going to happen and OK yes, it's going to happen..that's less stressful than well maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't"
The total number of furlough days could change after defense leaders analyze new spending legislation, but nobody's counting on it.
Nikki Webb "Every business is going to feel the pinch, because if these people don't have their regular pay, they can't put money into the economy"
Laura Hussey "To give you an idea of the scale, there are about 5700 defense workers at Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field alone. The furloughs are happening everywhere."
