Former LT Governor Carroll makes statement on resignation
FLORIDA -- Former Florida Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll says she does not believe she is a target of a multistate investigation.
Carroll abruptly resigned Tuesday amid the fallout of an internet gambling scandal.
The owner of a non-profit internet cafe company allegedly supplied illegal gambling software in Florida and claimed the games' proceeds would benefit a veterans group.
Carroll was also a consultant for the company while she was a state legislator.
In a statement, Carroll said it was a difficult decision to resign but that she refused to "allow the allegations facing a former client of my public relations firm to undermine the important work of the governor and his administration."
"I will not elaborate on her resignation other than to say that she did the right thing for the state and for her family."
So far, nearly 60 people have been arrested in 23 Florida counties in connection to the scandal.
Police say a second wave of arrests could involve elected officials.
Governor Rick Scott says he will wait until early May to name a replacement.
