Weather Alert

On the map below, the circle over the Gulf of Mexico is for an area of low pressure heading toward Texas.  Development is not expected.  Also, we're tracking Cristobal and a tropical wave over the Atlantic Ocean that may become another depression though chances are low.

Changes to Bayou Blvd

Traffic can get pretty heavy on Bayou Blvd.

Especially if you're trying to turn left onto 12th Avenue towards the airport.

Florida Department of Transportation officials wanted to add an extra left turn lane, but some citizens had other plans.

Adding an extra left turn lane would require widening the road, and tearing down two oak trees thate are off to the side.

Dianne Krumel and Barbara Mayall say that is an all around bad idea.

"The trees are what makes Pensacola beautiful," said Krumel.

"100-year-old heritage oaks are what makes Pensacola Beautiful, and just don't want to see us turn into another concrete jungle."

Aside from the trees, they say the turn lanes are not needed.

More than a year ago, the state added a turn lane on the northbound lanes of Bayou, taking away one southbound lane of traffic.
Now there are poles there  meant to divide the directions of traffic.
But critics say it only becomes confusing.

"At night time when you try to drive through this intersection on bayou, where those poles are, there are no reflectors. And you can run it-- it;s like a deer and headlights, they come out of nowhere and you don't know which side of the road you're on," said Barbara Mayall.

Mayall said when it comes to improving traffic flow on Bayou and 12th, state engineers just need to back off.
At a Wednesday morning meeting with local transportation leaders, state officials agreed to let a local committee come up with alternative plans to improve this intersection.
Mayall says the area needs handicap accessible curbs, and sidewalks along Bayou, North of 12th.

"We want this intersection the way it was, or some modifications to make it safer, it's not any safer now," said Mayall.

The local transportation group does not have a deadline to turn in their plans.
