Angels in our Midst (Diane Lowery)
Diane Lowery is doing a work she believes she was born to do.
It is hard work, it is costly and many times the laborers are few.
Still, she is a woman committed to task of an Angel in our Midst.
Diane Lowery, Panhandle Equine Rescue Founder; I think that God put that calling into my life. Ever since I can remember, I had pictures of horses on my walls. When I was a child, my parents couldn't afford to buy me a horse ... finally, when I got my first job as a teenager, I saved the money and made the first payment on my horse.
Her passion for horses turned into a full fledged rescue operation just by chance on a day in 2004 when she was on another saving mission.
Diane; I was out looking for a lost cat and I came across some emaciated horses.
What Diane didn't find was any department, or agency or "anyone" who would help them. She was advised that if she wanted something done, she needed to do it herself; so, she did. She founded Panhandle Equine Rescue.
Cathy King, Panhandle Equine Rescue Volunteer; She goes out and she see's that there's a horse or an animal in need she'll bring it in and take care of it and try to find a home for it, a good home.
Diane; Since then, it's been an adventure, It's been a very rewarding adventure.
And a challenging one.
Cathy; She's the president; she founded this. She organizes. She tries to get people encouraged. She gets up every morning and feeds the horses and then in the afternoon. She calls the vets. And there are just so many duties and so many responsibilities.
Diane; I lose a lot of sleep. I worry. I pray.
It's a lot that often falls squarely on Diane's shoulders; from the physical labor to the finances. There is always a need for volunteers and resources. Diane has taken 75 horses into the rescue program and has helped the owners of hundreds more take better care of their animals.
Diane; We've been able to save so many and help educate people so many people who are out there with horses and they don't really know what is involved in the care of a horse.
Diane; When you see their energy come back and the light come back in their eyes and they run across the pasture. It's beautiful.
Cathy; We're all connected somehow and it's important that we take care of each other and we also take care of animals. And her passion for animals, I mean, she has cats and dogs and horses. I mean, it's just a full circle.
Diane does admit, sometimes the load gets very heavy.
Diane; But, then God will open up a door. I'll get a phone call, I'll get a visitor, I'll get a donation ... and I'm able to go on for another day.
Cathy; You're just an angel, you're a keeper.
