Stomach bug spreading throughout the U.S.

A mystery stomach illness is spreading.
321 people in 15 states have come down with it, including 23 people in Florida.
The cause is a parasite called cyclospora, usually found on fruits or vegetables from tropical regions, but where this bug is coming from is still a mystery.

Channel 3' s Christina Leavenworth has more.
   
Most people have never heard of cyclospora.
It's a stomach virus going around America. There are cases in 15 states since June, more than 300 people have been diagnosed; in Florida, 23
How's it spread? It's a parasite that can be found on fresh fruits and vegetables, but they still don't know the source.

"It always makes me nervous when our foods are contaminated and can make you sick..."

While some are concerned, others say the numbers aren't high enough to make them do anything different.

"23 people out of whole state of Florida, yea I'm not concerned with that.."

The best way to prevent it? Doctors say make sure you are thoroughly washing your food.

"It can be very seriously, especially whose immune system is compromised, older and younger folks can be very affected by it..."

The symptoms: an upset stomach, weight loss, nausea.
The illness is easily treatable, but it can be deadly if untreated. More than 20 people across the country have been hospitalized.
At this time, there are no confirmed cases in Escambia County.
