FDA releases information on new vaccine for flu season

Flu season is just around the corner.
And the Food and Drug Administration has a new vaccine ready to help you fight it off.

The seasonal flu kills thousands of people in the U.S. every year. A new vaccine may help decrease that number and is now available at area hospitals and health clinics.

This is the first season that a vaccine to protect against more than three strains of the flu will be available.

The vaccine is called Flu-a-rix Quad-ri-valent is approved for people three years and older.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has placed the largest order for the new vaccine.

Doctors have known for years that two different types of the "B" Flu Strain sicken people. Despite this, scientists only picked one strain for the vaccine and were wrong six out of the last 11 years.

The new vaccine contains both. In the U.S. alone, Glaxosmithkline- the pharmaceutical company that makes the vaccine says it expects to provide up to 10 million doses of the 4-strain vaccine for the next flu season.

Liz Keehn
"I work for a health care organization. It helps protect our patients, their families and each other and our co-workers. Yes I have been getting it for several years."

Mike Wilkerson
"I do need to take a look into it a little more and find out more about it and see what they are doing."

As you might imagine the new vaccine is going to cost you a little more. The price is about 25 % higher that what you paid for your flu shot last year.
