Floridians need to beware of brain-eating Amoeba

FLORIDA  -  Floridians need to be on high alert for a brain-eating amoeba.
Naegleria Fowleri is found in lakes, rivers, and hot springs.

Basically anywhere fresh water is stagnant and at a warmer temperature.
The amoeba can be fatal when infected water enters through the nose and goes to the brain.

A 12-year-old Miami boy came in contact with it while playing in a water-filled ditch by his house earlier this month.

"Parents need to be vigilant regarding, considering what exposures might happen during the course of their activities during the warm summer months."

To lower the risk infection, health officials say people should avoid swimming in freshwater when the water temperature is high and the water level is low.
