HURRICANE GUIDE - PREPARING FOR A HURRICANE
Prepare for the storm early using our hurricane check list. The items below should be planned and collected 72 hours before the storm is predicted to hit.
- Plan an evacuation route
- Have backup plans in case routes are blocked or damaged by flooding
- Learn the location of nearby shelters
- Have disaster supplies on hand such as the following:
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Portable battery operated or solar handcrank radio and extra batteries
- Sunscreen
- Bug Repellant
- First aid kit and first aid procedures manual
- Emergency food and water
- Non-electric can opener
- Essential medications
- Plenty of cash and credit cards
- Sturdy shoes and warm clothing
- Make sure family members know how to respond before, during and after a hurricane
- Teach family members how to turn off gas, electricity, and water
- Have a contact outside of the area (preferably at least 200 miles away) so that all family members can report their whereabouts and condition
- Teach children how and when to call 911 and how to tune the radio for emergency information.
- Protect your windows
- Permanent shutters offer the best protection
- Plywood panels cut to fit the window are also a low cost option
- Trim back dead or weak branches from surrounding trees
- Check into flood or natural disaster insurance
