National Guard Manpower Readiness

New equipment is arriving at the Florida National Guard Headquarters.

It's bringing the guard closer to its goal of having at least 85 percent of the essential equipment it needs.

The equipment level is important because it measures the guard's readiness to help in natural disasters.

But even with the new arrivals, the guard is only at 63 percent equipment readiness.

That's up ten percent from April.

But Governor Charlie Crist says he's confident the guard is ready for anything.

I just talked to the general the day before yesterday, General Brunette, with the National Guard and he said he was very pleased about the helicopters and the new equipment that came back. In the event we have a hurricane we're well supplied and ready."

While the guard is only at 63 percent of equipment readiness, it is at 92 percent of its manpower readiness.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are back in play Thursday, mainly in the afternoon. Highs will reach 88 degrees or so. The 4th of July will bring the same, with mostly cloudy skies and a pretty good chance for scattered thundershowers in the afternoon. However, the chance of rain after 8 pm is down to 20%, so local celebrations should be fine. Over the weekend, we'll be partly to mostly cloudy, and scattered showers will continue.

In the tropics, Tropical Depression 2 has formed in the far Eastern Atlantic. The storm should move to the W/NW over the next few days. Meanwhile, a wave in the Western Atlantic, near the Lesser Antilles, is not looking very organized Thursday morning. ~Christian Garman
