It opened 25 years ago as a little backyard haven for injured critters.

Today, it spans seven acres and has garnered national and state sanctioning because of the quality of care it provides.

Voice of Dorothy Kaufmann, Wildlife Sanctuary; We take in injured and orphaned wildlife; anything from hummingbirds to bald eagles, little flying squirrels to white tailed deer. It's giving wildlife a second chance.

Dorothy Kaufmann has given lots of second chances...Some three to four thousand animals find a refuge here every year. She first came to the sanctuary about 14 years ago.

Dorothy; The place had a fire. I knew some of the folks who were pitching in to help and I started out taking care of some baby birds and I got hooked; absolutely got sucked in.

Now this place is in her blood. Dorothy admits this isn't the kind of charitable cause it's easy to raise money for. She's very grateful for the donated services of veteranarians and lots of volunteer hands. Larry Steimel's wife led him here.

Larry Steimel, Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteer; She'd come home with a lot of wonderful stories. And, one day she said, "They need somebody to go up on a ladder" and I said, "O.K., I'm not afraid of heights."

Dorothy made good use of Larry's comfort with heights and Peter Griffiths' design abilities. They and four other volunteers spent a year building this state of art aviary flight cage.

Larry; She delegates. If your hands are empty, you'll end up holding something. Whether it's alive of whether it's a piece of wood.

She never knows what's going to walk in the door so Dorothy has to be ready to hold anything.

Dorothy; This is our little nocturnal one. This is a flying squirrel.

Couldn't stand up on either leg; one leg was broken.

Apparently got ostracized and separated from mom and somebody found him.

We're a baby gray squirrel and we have not even opened our eyes yet.

Dorothy; It might be a bird that's supposed to be in the Gallapagoes Islands. It might be a little baby armadillo, it might be anything.

You never know.

The hope for everything that comes in, is that they can nurture it and release it into the wild again.
