Can you imagine having a critically ill child in a hospital and you being miles away?
Fortunately, parents whose children get care in Pensacola, don't have to face that dilemma.
They can stay close in a place where love...And Angels....abound.
Voice of Barbara Nelms; I had a personal experience in my family that was a tragedy and I had to go over eight hours. And I would have to stay in a hotel which cost quite a bit.
Six years ago, that personal experience brought Barbara Nelms to volunteer at Pensacola's Ronald Mcdonald House. Parents, like Jessica Limberis from Bonifay, stay here for free while their critically ill children are hospitalized.
Jessica; His blood doesn't clot. So, if he was to get cut he would bleed to death.
Jessica Limberis, Has a sick newborn; We called the Ronald McDonald House because we didn't have anywhere else to go. And we live off my husband's check. So, I don't know what we would have done if we wouldn't have had this place.
This place is called The House That Love Built and it's sustained through the love of volunteers like Barb who work to make this house, a home.
Barb; I clean and sanitize the kitchen. And I cook sometimes if they run out of people volunteering to cook.
She does whatever is needed to keep a full house in good order. Then, there is the intangible that she gives.
I have seen some of the most unbelievable miracles. So, I'm really knowing you're in the best of care.
Barb; It's a burden. They have so much on them. I try to show that I care and it helps sometimes, you can tell.
Yeah, she has diabetes. Oh, I'm so sorry. My husand has diabetes.
For her tireless devotion, Barb was recently presented the first-ever National "Give-A-Hand" Award by the Mcdonald's Corporation. The ceremony in New York honored those who make a difference in the lives of critically ill children and their families.
Jessica; This is just incredible. It's overwhelming that people give to people like this. I didn't think it was possible in the world today.
Barb; Something to make it better. In my heart I feel that if everybody just takes a little time to give of themselves, it would be a better world really.Angel In Our Midst (Barbara Nelms)
