In 1978, a parent board member of the Association For Retarded Citizens was asked to use his hobby and some clients to come up with entertainment for the annual meeting.
Little did he know, that one night stand would lead to 30 years of encore performances.
Now, his special steppers think it's time for Frank Cherry to take a bow.
< After "calling" lessons from his square dance buddies, Frank Cherry sought out some willing participants.
None of them knew anything about square dancing.
And that didn't matter. Frank had the patience and the will to teach them. He put in hours every week, going over and over and over the moves with the new group called, the special steppers.
Kathy Breeden, 15-year special stepper; i moved from the beginners class up to where i am now...And he's very good. He will work with you.
The group was so good and grew so large, frank decided to take their show on the road.
Frank Cherry, founder, special steppers; one of my main reasons was to change attitudes that people had about people with mental retardation.
That they could live, they could work, they could play, they could socialize.
Oliver Kessler, 20-year special stepper; it's fun; meet other people because we travel a lot.
The steppers have taken their moves...And their message all across the country; including three performances at the U.S. Capitol.
Frank; every time, someone would come out of the audience that had a brother, a sister, a mother, or father... And they would be crying cause they said, i never knew that they could do something like this. Terry kellen, special steppers co-founder; and he's always there inspiring them and having a good time. He keeps them on task and they love it.
After almost 30 years, age and ailments have cut their numbers and frank is recruiting the next generation of special steppers. He's still opening doors of opportunity and acceptance.
Kathy; he's really good. I mean, you know, he has changed, he's changed my life. He has changed a lot of lives of people that...And he's really good.
