An Angel In Our Midst (Alice Corns)
In 1980, Alice Corns was on a visit to her native ireland for her daughter's high school graduation.
She was involved in a near-fatal car crash that left her body maimed and her mind altered.
If it sounds like her life was over, you'll see, it was just beginning.
My son would come in, what did you do today in rehab, I learned to fall and get up. That's a big day's work for somebody like me, you know what I mean.
28 years ago, that was a big day for someone who had every bone on the right side of her body broken and brain trauma. Alice Corns' world was turned, literally, upside down.
You wake up one morning and you're a left handed person; you're not a right handed person any more. I have no depth perception Everything in my brain is reversed.
And, she'd never done art before.
I said, you know, I have this, I just want to pick up that pencil an draw. And he just said, well, mom quit talking.
So, the woman who rejoiced over being able to turn on a light switch, says god gave her a new gift. Though left is right, up is down and wide is narrow, Alice has adapted to create beautiful works of art.
I have no fear. See, a lot of artists, they're afraid their line is crooked, or the line is... That's been removed and it's a great liberation.
Alice is getting ready for her Ninth Annual Exhibit At The West Florida Rehab Institute. This is where she hopes her gift will inspire others.
Alice; It maybe not be art. It may be just getting out and smelling the roses. It may be getting out and just opening the door.
Linda Baily, West Florida Rehab; She's so willing to get out there and say, Hey, look what I did. And, you know, you can do it to. Some People believe that when God closes one door, He opens another and that may be the truth in Alice's case.
For all of her Irish grit and positive attitude, Alice says God doesn't let her get too high.
Alice; He keeps me humble. When I get cocky, I, all I have to do is look at my shoes. All right, I get the message, I get the message.
That's the hope I would give somebody, that, if you're alive you're ahead of the game.
