•  HURRICANE GUIDE - PREPARING FOR A HURRICANE

Prepare for the storm early using our hurricane check list. The items below should be planned and collected 72 hours before the storm is predicted to hit.

  • Plan an evacuation route
  • Have backup plans in case routes are blocked or damaged by flooding
  • Learn the location of nearby shelters
  • Have disaster supplies on hand such as the following:
    • Flashlight and extra batteries
    • Portable battery operated or solar handcrank radio and extra batteries
    • Sunscreen
    • Bug Repellant
    • First aid kit and first aid procedures manual
    • Emergency food and water
    • Non-electric can opener
    • Essential medications
    • Plenty of cash and credit cards
    • Sturdy shoes and warm clothing

  • Make sure family members know how to respond before, during and after a hurricane
  • Teach family members how to turn off gas, electricity, and water
  • Have a contact outside of the area (preferably at least 200 miles away) so that all family members can report their whereabouts and condition
  • Teach children how and when to call 911 and how to tune the radio for emergency information.
  • Protect your windows
  • Permanent shutters offer the best protection
  • Plywood panels cut to fit the window are also a low cost option
  • Trim back dead or weak branches from surrounding trees
  • Check into flood or natural disaster insurance
