FORT WALTON BEACH - The crisis in Haiti is hitting home for many who have given their time and money over the years to help its people.

We spoke with one missionary who splits his time between Okaloosa County and Haiti.

Chuck Martindale/Missionary to Haiti: "I went on my first trip in 1999 and on the side of a mountain I knew this was my mission work."

When Chuck Martindale isn't ministering to the homeless in Fort Walton Beach, he's in Haiti, rebuilding a country that was devastated long before the earthquake.

Martindale: "Haiti is hard to get anything done. Just a hard country to work in."

From mudslides caused by clear-cutting, to hurricanes and rampant poverty, the country has long been a destination for Christian missionaries like Chuck.

Martindale: "Without missionaries, thousands would die every day."

Over the ten years he's been making the trip, he's developed dozens of friends. So far, he knows of none that have died, but most he hasn't heard from yet.

Martindale: "I'm very concerned about them. Don't know, that's the problem."

Despite the shocking pictures filtering back to the States, Martindale says his faith is only strengthened.

Martindale: "God is on the throne. He knows what's going on. Because of this, people will know more about God, about Christ."

Martindale plans to go back to Haiti in about a week, a trip on which he had planned to build a church. Now, he's not sure what he'll be doing.Missionary Journeys Between Fort Walton Beach and Haiti
