PACE, FL - As holiday shopping increases, so does holiday shoplifting.

Investigators say on Monday, a couple stole hundreds of dollars worth of Lego's from the Target store in Pace.

Channel Three's Jake Peterson has more on how shoplifting hurts us all.

The suspected shoplifters came to the Pace Target store's toy aisle. They loaded the cart up with Lego sets, these are one hundred dollars a piece. They didn't take one or two but seven.

Investigators say the man and woman ignored the employees, the registers, and walked out.

This store surveillance video shows them getting into a gray van.

"It definitely increases over the holiday season."

Retailers say they see a ten percent increase in shoplifting during the holidays.

Target Manager Carla Smith says there's several reasons behind the rise.

"I think it's because people are more needy of things and expectations for having gifts for the family."

And traffic flow increases.

"It makes it harder cause the little things get by when there are a lot of people in the way and around."

She says what the Lego duo is suspected of doing is called boosting.

"They come in and get large amounts of one item or certain items and they try to just run out with just as much as they can get and they have rings of people who do that."

Most retailers see boosters during the holiday season.

Last year, a group took three large TV's from the Pace Wal-Mart.

"It takes money away from the community because it takes money from the stores."

One national reports say consumers end up paying more than three hundred dollars a year to make up for theft.

Store managers say the loss is frustrating, but most people are honest shoppers.

"Our average guest isn't stealing and often they help detour people who are."

In the state of Florida a shoplifter must steal at least 300 dollars worth of merchandise for it to be considered a felony.Retail Theft Increases As The Holidays Near
