PENSACOLA - Some University of West Florida students are sleeping outside tonight.

It's all in an effort to raise awareness about homelessness as part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

The students spent the early evening learning about homelessness in our state, and slept in tents Wednesday night.

They are also wanting to raise awareness about hate crimes against the homeless.

"Trying to bring awareness about how Florida has been number 1 for national hate crimes towards the homeless for the past 4 years."

There have been several incidents of homeless beatings in our state. Some have even been caught on tape.

A young man from Milton was even charged in a homeless beating in south Florida.

There are more than 28,000 homeless people in the state.UWF Students Camping Out to Raise Homeless Awareness
