ORANGE BEACH - Tropical Storm Ida may not have packed the punch some were expecting here in Escambia County, but the wind and the waves did do considerable damage closer to the eye.

For fishermen along Orange Beach, the catch has been good in the hours after Tropical Storm Ida blew through, but their favorite spots have taken a beating in the storm.

"We've never seen it tore up quite like this. I've seen it tore up, not like this."

Eight feet of sea wall was breached by waves Monday night, washing away concrete and leaving a pothole at least five feet below the level of the roadway.

"Yesterday evening, the waves covered road, guess that's what did it."

The new Orange Beach pier also fell victim to Ida.

Winds blew out wooden panels and railings, while waves heavily damaged water lines and electrical wires.

"That's where I was going to go fishing today, and it's closed. Didn't know it had any damage."

"Closed us out of a fishing day, looking for another place to fish right about now."

Not everybody was complaining about Ida's high waves.

"Today's waves were exceptional, we don't see this very often."

Over 50 surfers flocked to the shores along Perdido Key, enjoying the rare swells.

It looks like the fishermen got the short end of the stick, but even with their options severely limited, they are trying to make the best of it.

"I drove all the way from Foley, gonna have to at least put the line in the water for a little while anyway."

February 09, 2010 06:14 EST

WESTON, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating a traffic accident in which a truck full of goats, pigs and chickens crashed into another vehicle, killing one person and several animals.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the accident happened Monday night in Broward County, about 15 miles north of Weston, when a flatbed truck jackknifed and was struck by another vehicle.

The driver of the second truck was killed, and dozens of animals thrown onto the road.

Some of the livestock escaped into the Everglades, and investigators fear they could become a road hazard.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
