PENSACOLA - Crime scene investigators don't get to see many happy endings.

But tonight, one Pensacola investigator with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is riding high after being the one to find Baby Shannon, the missing Chipley girl, alive and well after a multi-day search.

Channel Three's Laurie Bernstein has the story you will see only on 3.

Hayley Hill was one of four investigators searching the home of Susan Baker Wednesday.

They all prepared themselves for the worst when they entered.

Instead, they got the surprise they never could have imagined.

"It's upsetting to think that anyone could treat a small child like that."

For nearly two hours, Hayley Hill and her fellow crime scene investigators left no stone unturned, searching every nook and cranny of Susan Baker's trailer for any sign of Baby Shannon.

"We had turned over entire house, looking for Shannon, get to the last room, clearing the room, very last thing was looking underneath the bed."

There they saw this two-by-three cedar chest, their last hope to find any trace of Baby Shannon.

"We opened the box, she was very still for first few seconds, and I couldn't see her face, just saw her torso and she was very still, my heart sank, but then I saw her arms move, she was alive."

Hill says once Shannon was out of the box, she looked around, then smiled at her rescuers. That's when they knew she would be just fine.

"To find her alive was such an emotional jolt for me, personally, because I was expecting the worst, to know that she was alive and appeared to be well, I just couldn't help it, I started crying."

It's a case Hill says she will never forget, and that Baby Shannon will always hold a special place in her thoughts.

"No matter what, I hope the best for her, that she has a wonderful, positive future from here on out, and that she never has to go through anything like that again."

Baby Shannon's mom, Christina Mercer, and her aunt, Susan Baker, are still in jail tonight.

The Department of Children and Families is in the process of deciding if Baby Shannon will go to relatives, or stay in agency custody.Pensacola Crime Scene Investigator Recalls Finding "Baby Shannon"

Probation for teen who helped in murder plot
November 20, 2009 18:16 EST

MIAMI (AP) -- A 13-year-old Miami Beach boy accused in a murder plot has agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors.

His attorney says the boy accepted the deal Friday and will not serve any serious prison time.

In September, the teen was accused of joining the plot of a 15-year-old friend to kill the older boy's mother. The younger boy stabbed her, but the steak knife broke on her collar bone.

Police charged the son with conspiracy, solicitation to commit murder and tampering with evidence.

The 13-year-old pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of aggravated battery, reduced from the initial charge of attempted murder. He will be on probation for six years and must undergo regular psychiatric treatment.

The 15-year-old boy remains in custody.
