REGIONAL - A once exclusive insurance group is opening it's doors to millions of people.

USAA once served only military officers and the enlisted Depending on when they served.

But today they announced they're loosening eligibility requirements.

Now, anyone who ever served and was honorably discharged will qualify.

If they sign up, their adult children and unmarried ex-spouses will also qualify.

As Channel Three's Dan Thomas explains, some people in our area already hope to save some cash.

While other insurance agencies are begging for bailouts, USAA has increased their net worth by a billion dollars over the last year.

They hope to use their financial stability to spring board into a massive new market offering their services to an additional 35 million customers including almost anyone who's ever served and their families.

Dan Thomas/Reporter: "USAA is a private company so what's the big deal about them offering their services to more people. Why wouldn't you offer your services to everyone?"

John Townes/USAA Spokesman: "Uh, USAA is a company founded by the military for the military and their families, we are not a take all commerce company. We understand the military community. How they operate, what their restrictions are on their lifestyle and we feel like we have products that are properly placed and competitive for the military community."

Inside the VFW post in Midway you'll find two types of people those who have USAA and those who wish they did.

Allen Van Dyk/USAA Customer: "All State and Farmer's Insurance. They could not compare and even looking at Geico, they can not compare with what USAA has."

Allen van Dyk retired from the Marines in 2001 after USAA started allowing the enlisted.

Roger "Doc" Holliday/Now Eligible for USAA Coverage: "Didn't qualify at the time."

Roger "Doc" Holliday retired from the Air Force in the 1970s before USAA accepted the enlisted.

But that all changed with today's announcement.

Roger "Doc" Holliday/Now Eligible for USAA Coverage: "When it comes time to renew, I might check the prices."

First on his mind, getting prices on homeowners insurance. His has increased over 400 percent in the last 5 years.
