GULF SHORES - A Gulf Shores Fire Fighter is crediting a safety device inside his home for saving his family's life.

Corey Parker's house caught fire Wednesday night, on Mifflin Road, in Foley.

Channel Three's James Jackson spoke with Parker today and has the story.

This video was taken by Foley Fire Fighters as they battled a fire on Mifflin Road.

Corey Parker, a fellow fire fighter, and his family were inside sleeping.

Corey Parker/Homeowner, "The smoke detectors went off. I jumped up. I ran to get the kids out of the other bedrooms. Didn't see any smoke in there. Went to my bedroom. Opened the door up. There was smoke. There was fire."

That's where the fire started and quickly spread.

In his three years of fighting fires, this was one Parker couldn't put out.

Corey Parker/Homeowner, "I just couldn't believe it. I really don't know what I was thinking. I was doing everything I could to stop it. My neighbor came out. He grabbed his water hose and was helping me but, there was just nothing he could do."

Fire fighters finally got the blaze under control.

The only things that were saved: Pictures, a safe and some documents.

While the family was cleaning up, an outpouring of support came from complete strangers.

Jane Tarver/Neighbor, "I said those kids have to have Halloween and I said lets go to Walmart, get a gift card and bring it back to them. I know they need a lot of things. This is very traumatic to them losing everything they had."

Corey Parker/Homeowner, "It hits home. Now I know how other people feel when we show up to their house. I can relate to them now."

No one was hurt in the blaze.

Parker says all because of his smoke alarm.

Corey Parker/Homeowner, "That's what saved my family's life. They're very, very important. Change the batteries every year, whether they need them or not, change them. I owe my life to them."

The Parker family is currently staying with friends.

OCALA, Fla. (AP) -- The Travolta's are home for the Ocala open of the new Disney comedy 'Old Dogs' and to help raise money for five charities.

John Travolta, Kelly Preston and their daughter Ella Bleu Travolta greeted hundreds of fans on the red carpet Friday. The family expressed their appreciation to the community, ending their thanks with: "Love you, Ocala."

In January, 16-year-old Jett Travolta died at the family vacation home in Grand Bahamas.

The private gala raised money for five nonprofit agencies selected by Travolta: The Jett Travolta Foundation, Florida Highway Patrol Advisory Council, Project Hope, the Marion County Public Safety Assistance Trust, and the Humane Society of Marion County.

About 150 tickets at $250 apiece were sold to the general public, and the gala also had private invitations.
