WASHINGTON, D.C. - New since six, a local doctor is now the United States surgeon general.
The U.S. senate confirmed Dr. Regina Benjamin's nomination Thursday night.
Doctor Benjamin is a family practice doctor who founded a non-profit health clinic in Bayou La Batre.
She gained national prominence as the first woman and first African-American to sit on the board of trustees of the American Medical Association.
Benjamin is also a recipient of the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights, and last fall, received a Macarthur Foundation Genius Grant.Local Doctor Confirmed As U.S. Surgeon General
