ESCAMBIA COUNTY - Classes began just a couple of hours ago at Myrtle Grove Elementary School.

Cafeteria workers reported a suspicious substance...causing class to start late this morning.

It all began just before 7am.
An Escambia Fire Rescue chief says a white substance blew out of a freezer as workers opened it.

The substance got on one of the workers...who reported a stinging sensation on their arm.

Fire and hazmat teams swept the area...and determined that the substance was *not harmful.

Meanwhile...parents...students...and other workers were forced to wait outside the school's gates.

Students on buses were held at Escambia High School until the situation was cleared up.

But one parent says she's grateful for how the school handled things.
Haley Smith: "I'm very happy that they're taking these kind of precautions' I understand no one can call out this morning...You know. They can't call out to every parent. I guess this is all they can do."

Fire and hazmat officials are trying to determine what the substance was.
