Former Owner Tim Kerr Makes New Hockey Pitch to Pensacola Tim Kerr, the former, and most popular, owner of the Pensacola Ice Pilots hockey club, confirms that he has contacted Escambia County officials about possibly bringing a hockey team back to Pensacola. But Kerr told Channel 3 Sports, Wednesday, that he is not optimistic that it can be worked out for awhile. And he doesn't believe hockey in Pensacola next fall is realistic. Kerr says the lease agreement his Ice Pilots had with to play in the Pensacola Civic Center was too steep and restrictive. If it's not adjusted, he sees no sense pursuing putting a new franchise in Pensacola. And, he acknowledges the economy makes it a tough time to pitch a franchise. Kerr is interested in a Southern Professional Hockey League franchse. It's less expensive to operate than the ECHL, the league in which the Ice Pilots played from 1996 to 2008. But he believes it would work best if franchises in Biloxi, Mississippi and Lafayette, Louisiana were to enter the league with a Pensacola franchise. Biloxi's current ECHL franchise has struggled, financially. Its future in the ECHL is in doubt. Kerr owned the Ice Pilots for two seasons, 2003-2004 and '04-'05. His second team won the Brabham Cup for having the best regular season record in the entire ECHL. And Ice Pilots' attendance and corporate sponsorships increased during Kerr's ownership. Kerr sold the franchise to Mario Forgione after that halcyon '05 season. Kerr has expressed regret at selling the team. But Forgione made him an offer he couldn't pass up. Three disastrous seasons under Forgione followed, before the franchise folded in 2008. Escambia County's committee of the whole will discuss the SPHL's proposal at its April 9th meeting. 6 PM Sportscast 03-11-09
