Road Rage Bill: Do you support the so-called "Road Rage Bill", that would ticket drivers who block traffic in the left lane on highways?

59.64% Yes
38.59% No

Comment: I support the bill because I hate it when people go slower than the speed limit in the left lane. from Cantonment, FL by Chelsey

Comment: The left lane is for passing and when drivers drive in that lane and don't move over should be ticketed from Atmore, Alabama by Judy

Comment: Would it not be better to penalize those who act out against the driver obeying the speed limit? How long would one be allowed to drive un-ticketed in the left lane? How fast before a driver is not cited? Priorities seem reversed. from Pensacola, Florida by Robin

Comment: It is outrageous to think that that the senate would pass a bill making me responsible for someone else's behaviour by ticketing me for going the speed limit. If I am going to make a left turn a few blocks down the road, it is necessary for me to get into the left lane as soon as I can find a break in the traffic in order to accomplish this turn. Today's drivers are not courteous enough to slow down and let someone in when they see a left blinking directional light. from Pensacola, FL by Priscilla

Comment: Excuse me? Obey the law and pay for it? Did the state troopers give up on ticketing the speeders, so they're giving them a free ride on the left lane? I follow the speed limit anywhere I drive but the attitude of our lawmakers on this bill shows us that we did not elect the sensible ones. What's next, I wonder..... from Milton, Fl by Abe

Comment: It's about time!!!! that's why you see signs that say."SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT". you the right lane to pass then move over. from Pensacola FL by John

Comment: Absolutely I support the bill. If someone is going the speed limit then they should be in the right hand lane in line. Allowing others to pass.

Comment: In Europe they pass and know to get over in the right lane after passing. I learned this when I was taught to drive. It's the right thing to do. It would not cause as many accidents if people would just get over. As a law it seems silly. People just need to learn how to drive and there are crazy ones up here. from Pensacola by Jay

Comment: I support this bill. I am from New Jersey where there is a tremendous amount volume on the roads and this law is imposed there. We follow the rule of passing in the left lane or you get a ticket. Passing this bill would relieve much of the congestion in the area. It's a simple way to prevent accidents and road rage. from Fort Walton Beach/FL by Kimberly

Comment: It is shameful that a bill of this type has to be introduced, however when people fail to use common courtesy on the roadways it becomes necessary. As a professional driver I have seen more and more rude discourteous drivers who think that holding up traffic in the left lane and preventing drivers from passing is a fun sport. Driving is NOT a contact sport and as such no driver is responsible for policing other drivers' speed. If a drivers chooses to disobey the speed limit allow them to pass and perhaps you may save a life rather than attempting to block the driver and causing tempers to flair resulting in road rage crimes. from Pensacola, FL by Mary

Comment: This would help eliminate road rage, and drivers doing unsafe things to get around slower drivers. The flow of traffic is usually regulated by conditions and is often above the speed limit, so people who drive the speed limit are impeding the flow and could easily move over and do that from the right hand lane, which is what it is designed for. from Navarre, FL by Myron

Comment: The person breaking the existing speed limit should be ticketed. If the highway patrol can stop someone in the left lane doing 70, they can stop someone pushing their way to exceed the speed limit AND SHOULD DO SO. Can't people in authority see how ridiculous this is? Get the fines from the lawbreakers, for heaven's sake!!! from Pensacola Florida by Karen

Comment: Yes, this makes sense to me. I come from a big city, and people move over to the right to let people pass. If they want to get back over they do. Traffic flows much more smoothly this way (usually)! Down here, I find it very frustrating, because people drive so SLOW - below the speed limit. I understand tourists, but this happens all the time even in slow season. If you have no intention of going the speed limit then quite simply...move over. Let the people pass that are driving the limit. Not everbody is speeding, we just want to at least go the limit. This many times backs up traffic tremendously, because of a couple cars blocking the flow. from Navarre, FL by Kristin

Comment: the left lane on interstate highways should be, as much as possibel with traffic permitting, a passing lane only. There are far too many people who, regardless of their speed will remain in the left lane even when it is obvious that traffic is massing behind them. They create a traffic hazard by doing this selfish act. by Kenneth

Comment: This has NOTHING to do with the speed limit. I have seen people in the left lane going 30mph that will just not pull over. If you get a driver next to him in the right lane going 30mph,(which is where the slow drivers should be)you now essentially have a road block and traffic backs up at the expense of the slow driver in the left lane. No one can pass even going 40mph (within the speed limit). Furthermore, it is not safe to pass on the right (it may even be illegal). The rule of the road is "ride to the right, pass to the left". It is just that simple. from Pensacola Florida by Kathleen

Comment: This bill is designed for interstate highways and those multi-lane highways with limited access (ie highway 85 between crestview and Niceville). There are consistently people that drive these highways and block the left lane driving slower than the posted speed limit. There are signs posted on these highways directing "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT", and it states in the Florida Drivers Handbook that after passing pull back into the right lane people aren't obeying on their own. A Law is required. from Crestview by William

Comment: Exceeding a posted speed limit is neither legal nor should it be condoned. The five mph window over the posted limit is for the convenience of law enforcement, not the driving public. Moving traffic smoothly should be addressed by State D.O.T. If a person is unable to reach their destination without exceeding the speed limit they need to enroll in classes for time and/or anger management. from Gulf Breeze by Bruce

Comment: A bill such as this one would give "high speeders" free gratis to travel at a high rate and feel as if are in compliance with "traffic moving smoothly" concept. The resonable flow of traffic does not justify anyone to exceed the posted state limits. As it is 5MPH over still is debated when sheriffs or FHP enforce zero tolerance at given times.Penalizing the drivers who travel at the LEGAL LIMITS is proposterous and a way for the county/stateto get another revenue which in hard times it'll robfrom peter to pay paul. The EMS/EMT/PARAMEDICS shift work wont see the money. They will be responding to MVA more so.And the safe driver will be ticketed by an raged driver who ight of had a bad day be late or MAD OR DRUNK.aND LEGISLATURE WISHES TO CONDOLE THIS BEHAVIOUR LEGALLY.NUTS. As a former firefighter rescue here in Pensacola flo 10yrs I witnessed the slaughter of high spped.Just remember 1985 Tonowanda and 61st Ave in Myrtly Grove and 6 young lives lost just because of sppeding.I WAS THERE AS A F/F/RES. from Pensacola/Fl by Larry

Comment: No,no,a thousand times no. what is senator Bennet thinking? a few well researched enforceable laws are preferable to a proliferation of this type of kneejerk legislation.I can actually see this having the unintended consequence of encreasing road rage. We don't have enough law officers on the roads to enforce this idea. "what a moroon" from milton,fl by herb

Comment: Way back, when I took drivers ed, we were told that we could not drive in the left lane, we could only use it for passing. A while back I checked and found that Florida had a law that said the left lane was for passing only. Today I searched and Florida Statute 316.081 states that people are to drive in the right lane unless passing. Of course that may not be what the law means. If the law is still on the books then the police need to enforce that law. They also need to enforce the law that says you cant follow too closely. If there isnt one on the books then we do need a law that says that if we are not passing a vehicle then we should be driving in the right lane. After that law gets passed we then need to get the police to start ticketing people if they arent following the road rules. It irritates me to no end when I get behind someone in the left lane who is just going the speedlimit or even less and wont get over. We are still going to have those crazy people driving like a wild person speeding and changing lanes all the time. No law is going to fix that, only police enforcing the rules are going to help cut down on the problem. People use to be considerate when they were driving on the road, now everyone is only out for themselves, not thinking about other drivers or that their actions or inactions have an affect on every other driver around them. If people would be considerate and police enforce all the rules then things might get better. from Gulf Breeze, FL by Rachel

Comment: Yes I do support this bill. IF you can pass and return to the right lane you should do so. Don't worry about the "guy" speeding pass you after returning to the right lane. The law will settle with him/her. from Pensacola/Florida by Kenny

Comment: I support the bill, if the drivers in the left lane would speed up and get back over after they pass another car then there would not have to be a bill put into law. You were always taught to pass on the left and slower drivers stay in the right lane. Drivers don't realize that if a car in the oncomming traffic were to have an accident the left lane is the first place that oncomming car is going to hit. For safety reasons I believe this law should pass. I hate passing drivers on the right, it is a plain safety hazard. Even after you have flashed your high beams asking them nicely to move over to the right most don't get over, then 10-15 miles later they wake up and move over. Maybe if the law doesn't pass this will wake some people up and they will pass on the left. from Baker by Brett

Comment: The speeders just need to slow down and go the speed limit! from Pensacola, Florida by Brenda

Comment: Absolutely. For those concrete-brains out there: SLOWER TRAFFIC-KEEP RIGHT! What is so hard to figure out? If you are doing the speed limit and the guy behind you is going faster, pull into the right lane and let him pass you. Period. There should be no questions. So what if you are doing the posted limit, that does not entitle you to slow traffic; besides the speeder has just as much right to that ticket as you do. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom

Comment: Tickets should now be given to all those who insist on driving in the left lane pulling boats, utility trailers full of junk, and older cars that look like they are looking for a place to die. from Navarre, Fl. by Gene

Comment: oh yeah! its about time! someone did something to these "rolling" road hazards! it not like majority of the public is going excessively over the speed limit. its usually wthin 5-10 mph over...no big deal. but some of these drivers that is purposely blocking in drivers by going with the speed of the outside lane...these drivers need a recourse in driver mannerism! from p'cola by h

Comment: When super highways were made, the left hand lane was intended for passing. People did not just cruise along in the left lane. Now every one thinks it's there for them to drive in on a continous basis. It's to open up the left again! from Pensacola,FL by June

Comment: They should be inforcing this now. when most people took their driving test it said the left lane was for passing and faster traffic, when did the law change that made the left lane just another lane? from pace by Robert

Comment: I think it is about time because it eases the flow of traffic on already congested hiways. from Milton Fl by Doug

Comment: Why should I pay for someone else who is breaking the law? from Milton, FL by Mike

Comment: The left lane is for passing slower traffic. There are signs that say slower traffic keep right. I bet there are drivers who have never noticed these signs and I know there are many who ignore them. from Robertsdale, Al by Charlotte

Comment: I could support this bill IF (and only IF) it were limited to drivers in the left lane going slower than the posted speed limit. from Gulf Breeze

Comment: I agree with Priscilla--it's impossible to change lanes in Pensacola traffic, so if i'm turning left I have to get in the left lane right away. In fact, that's the only reason i'd ever be in the left lane--either to escape right-lane construction or to make a left turn. from Pensacola, Fl by Faith

Comment: There is already a law to try to stop that. "Slower Traffic Keep Right". Why don't they just enforce that?? from Bunnell, FL by Jim

Comment: These same self righteous jerks can be just as self righteous in the slow lane and talk on their cell phones too. from PCB, Fl by M

Comment: The left lane is for the speeders - get out of their way! My problem is the tail-gaters while I drive the speed limit on a 2 lane road. Slower (at the speed limit) accidents are less likely to produce bad accidents. THAT IS WHY THEY SET A SPEED LIMIT! from Pensacola by Steve

Comment: yes I agree, I learned when I first went through drivers education that the left lane was for passing. I don't believe that that has changed. from pensacola, FL. by William

Comment: Nice thought, but... here's your classic example : You're driving along HWY 98 East of Gulf Breeze, it's after dark, you're way past street lights, looking for a street on the left, and a left turn split in the median. You know you're close, because you've just passed a landmark, so you're driving the speed limit or a little less... when all of a sudden, up behind you roars a high-flying SUV, blinking it's headlights, and roars right up on your rear end, and shines the brights so intensely you can barely see... It happens all the time, and now all we need is some law to make these jerks feel even more self-righteous about it... Whatever happened to being a good neighbor and driving safely and considerately on the roads? from Pensacola, FL by Michael

Comment: You should not have to leave the left lane open to allow people to speed!!! Speeders should be ticketed, not helped to break the law!!! from Milton, FL by Connie

Comment: YES! When I have to go somewhere really fast, and I drive up behind someone going really s-l-o-w... and I'm right up on their bumper and I flash my lights and honk my horn and rev my engine, they should get a ticket for not ditching off the road -- it's a lot better than me beating them with a tire iron! In fact, they should make a law against the stupid driving at all! from Pensacola, FL by Jack

Comment: "A bill that seeks to provide relief for those traveling at high rates of speed" Don't ya think those are the ones that need the ticket? Maybe that is why the money from the fines will go to trauma centers.. If the speed limit is posted and you are doing it what difference does it make what lane your in.. it is the others that are disobeying the law.. ticket them for being on my bumper. If they are in that big of a hurry they can change lanes. from Pensacola Florida by Sheena
