Should a candidate's religious beliefs matter when it comes to picking a President?
Comment: No.
I do not think a Presidential candidate's religious beliefs matter. by Florida
Comment: this country was based on belief in god and values it should stay that way by rickey
Comment: President Bush has showed us how religious beliefs influence a President's decisions. A true leader of our country would look at things more objectively. by Deb
Comment: A candidates religious beliefs would not influence my vote one way or another.
What does influence my vote is the way the candidate campaigns. Attack ads, innuendoes, smears, lies and dirty tricks innuendoes portend his or her actions if elected. President G. W. Bush used attack ads, lies and smear tactics, made deniable through the use of PAC's, to win both elections. He used the same tactics to take us to war in Iraq and still uses them liberally. by Mort
Comment: Normally I would say no. If that candidate is true to their religion. Basically Christian, Islam Hindu ECT.
The Mormon Church is a cult having the basic beliefs of Christianity.
Being partially raised as a Mormon and later converting to a Christian because of extensive research into Mormonism, I would think twice before voting for a Mormon. They have their own agenda.

Comment: The more religious, the better. I am afraid of all the hippie congressmen and senaters we have in office now. They are ruining this country beyond repair and the news media is helping them do it. by Brenda
Comment: We keep taking religion out of schools, sports programs and prisons, screaming violation of seperation of church and state. Yet, we demand to know a politicians religious beliefs. A case of American's wanting to have their cake and eat it too. I don't care if a politician is of the same beliefs as I am or not, religion is not a "hot button" issue a candidiate needs to deal with. What matters is their stand on healthcare, medications, the war and taxes and whether they will actually do anything about it or just bluster and blow. by T
Comment: I think that we should keep state (government) and religion separate like it is supposed to be but if we can not do this then maybe we should start taxing churches as we do everyone. With the revenue collected from churches alone we could do away with our deficeit. by John
Comment: The tenets of the belief is what is most important. The belief should be one that promotes ethics, morals, and family values. The religion should be one that realizes that there is a time for war as well as a time for peace.
The denomination is not as important as much as the tenets of the religion.
An added note regarding the current war: those who truly STUDY a Christian-based religion should already understand the reason for NOT supporting the Palestines: God gave Israel the land and it is not in biblical alignment for them to just give it up. by Lola
Comment: Our country was founded on stronge christian beliefs and the ten commandments. Read the constitution. One of our long past presidents wrote a prayer of his salvation. But don't go by my words, it is found in the Freedom Documents organized by Pastor Chuck Baldwin of Crossroads Baptist Church and can be purchased through his web site at ChuckBaldwinlife.com. by Vickie
Comment: Yes, I do think that the Presidential Candidate's religious beliefs matter. It is the position of our country. Our country is based on the" In God we Trust" method! Morals, some people feel what ever feels good do it! It reflects on our position as a parent, spouse, and employer or employee. ethics. It is easier to go with the crowd and do whatever they feel, but when you stand up and confess what you believe in and what our Fathers and Mothers have taught us. Yes, I do believe that our Candidates should tell us about their religious beliefs are!
Thank you for your time.

Comment: ABSOLUTELY IT MATTERS!It sets the moral code for the whole country. All issues are based on moral beliefs such as abortion, same sex marriages, etc.and I would want a canidate that has the same views. In the Bible it says in Psalms 33:12 "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His inheritance".That is why IN GOD WE TRUST! by Halsey
Comment: Religion and Politics; two topics that are fire and water. Machiavelli established in The Prince that religion is a governing agency. Politics is a governing agency. Religion seeks to govern and control our conscious (church) and politics seeks to govern and control our overt behavior (state). Political office gives elected officials power. No one has the right to impose their religion on anyone, anymore than imposing their politics on anyone. Therefore, establishing that religion and politics are both govering agencies (albeit briefly)a Presidential candidate's religious beliefs do matter. A Presidential candidate's faith should remain personal to him/her and to every one of us because faith is the light within us. by C
Comment: As long as they don't try pushing their religion once in office, I could care less what religion they are. I think Kennedy was the one that stated it best qwhen he said something similar to " I don't expect the Catholic religion to tell me how to run the country, and I will not tell them how to run the church".
That's the way it should be. May the best man win by Ray
Comment: our country was founded on the bible Gods word, and it was exspected that anyone in a leadership role was to be a christian spirit filled man and people that fled to america were coming here because of freedom to worship God not other religuos sects, that are here today, its in God we trust the God of the Bible and only the bible as all others are writen by man and not by spirit. amen by dana
Comment: Knowing a candidates religious beliefs gives the voting public an insight into their personal values. by Linda
Comment: I think a person's religious beliefs, Presidential candidate or not, most definitely influence their decisions. While I would never dismiss a candidate strictly due to religious affiliation, I would have to consider it when trying to determine whether that person would best represent our country's interests. by Tina
Comment: I am deciding based on his interpretation of the constitution and how he would appoint judges by Steve
Comment: If a candidate was "blabering"
on about his religious beliefs it would get anoying dont you think. Still i dont think a person that wants to become pres. should talk about his religious beliefs. by Dillon
Comment: I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ALL THE CANDIDATES RELIGIOUS. IT IS RUMORED THAT OBAMA WENT TO MUSLUM SCHOOLS AND IS A MUSLUM. PLUS HE WOULD NOT TAKE AN OATH ON THE BIBLE FOR THE SENATE.????? by BARBARA
Comment: Even though I may not be old enough to vote, I know that religion should not be a matter in Presidential voting. Whether it be catholic, baptist, protestant or Jew. Who really cares? All we should care about is what they promise to do to help the country, what their educational background is and their political experience is to see if they are fit for ruling our country. Religion has nothing to do with intelligence, and we should only vote with the political and educational background of the candidate in mind. by Amelia
Comment: in a country that supposedly espouses religious freedom, this interrogative should not even be pondered. by gerald
Comment: A person's belief system is a part of him or her and a part of their core beliefs and it DOES impact how they can lead the nation. I feel that people are too concerned about one person and if they are going to question one candidate, they should be questioning ALL of them about their faiths or their lack of. by Darlene
Comment: If my president doesn't believe in Jesus Christ, and only Jesus Christ, I do not want him/her making decisions that will affect me, my family, or my country! by CHRISTINE
Comment: All of us as Americans are free to speak, think, and worship as we feel we should. Why should it make any difference what religious beliefs a candidate has. What really should be on everyones mind is whether the candidate is right for the job. I guess we could PRAY about it. by David
Comment: We need someone that loves the Lord Jesus Christ to control the United States. by Krystal
Comment: A candidate shouldn't tout his religious beliefs as the main reason to support him. A candidate promoting religious freedom and liberty in all areas as the most important issue will unite votes of all religious beliefs as Ron Paul is doing. by Daniel
Comment: I am going to vote for the person that believe is right for my country. I understand that we all have very different views on this matter, but that is what makes our country great. I already know I am going vote for. by Janice
