Jim Paul's arrest: Do you believe the video of Escambia Superintendent Jim Paul's DUI arrest should have been broadcast?
Comment: I don't agree with you playing the video. I'm very unhappy that you chose to do that.
Comment: I think the video should be shown. Like Bob said, when you are a public figure as is Jim Paul, then you're life is not your own.
The ole saying "Can't do the time, don't do the crime".
Good work WEAR, Jim Paul should not be given any special treatment and not showing it in my opinion would have done that. It is what it is, like it or not! from Cantonment, FL by Lisa
Comment: I did not see it, but I don't think it should have been aired. I have seen government officials in Escambia County and Pensacola in who have been intoxicated in public, including judges. Some of them even drove. If you are going to do it to Paul, then look for the others also. Some may not be arrested because of their political status. I do not agree with Paul's actions, but there should not be selective reporting by the news media. Include them all. from Milton, FL by D
Comment: The phrase that comes to mind is; "Be sure your sins will find you out." Sadly, Mr. Paul is expected to be a role model for Escambia School District Students. Isn't he a shining example of what they should strive for? If the man had any integrity, he would remove himself from any leadership position involving children and teenagers. from Cantonment by Rebecca
Comment: Jim Paul's arrest was news; he is a public figure, and more than anything a school superintendent. Channel 3 had every RIGHT to show the video, I’m glad they did, and they have “NO REASON TO APOLOGIZE FOR DOING THEIR JOB” they report the news; they did not give Paul the glasses of wine - that was his choice. Sometimes issues and people in the news will not always be the way we want to believe it. Seeing the video, I’m sure was proof that the media had not lied on Paul, he indeed broke the law “drinking and driving”. Good job Channel 3. from Pensacola by Dru
Comment: I believe it should have been aired. There were no big arguments when they aired Benny Washington, Hugh King, Ron Mcnesby, Albert McCreary, or Leon Rankins Just to name a few. Everyone knows the consequences of doing wrong and this video being aired should not have surprised any viewers. Keep up the GOOD work WEAR Jim Paul set a bad example and now he has to face the critisizm. from Pensacola/Fl by Ebony
Comment: he went out after the conference and drank then he drove that is a no no ......when he done that he also gave escambia county a bad name with others in power
if it was a teacher he would have fired them are gave them a choice to quit.. his policy is zero tolerence.so he needed to follow it .to set a better example to others.. from pensacola by keith
Comment: I believe that the video should have been shown wether he plead guilty or not, had it not been shown on television nobody would know for sure wether he was indeed drunk or not. It's time to quit living in denial, supporting the hypocrites that make and break our laws, and realize that the very people who shape our kids minds are just as corrupt as the people we lock up every day! from Pensacola, Florida by Rick
Comment: Jim Paul. I think he should be fired. What example is he setting for school childrens with a DUI? He's a booser, and showing the DUI tape is good News. Thanks channel 3.
bd. from pensacola/fl by big
Comment: Yes you should have shown the video, and it should be done more often on all, ALL, of our public officals.Continue without concern for who they are. from Walnut Hill, FL by Kenneth
Comment: What I find difficult to believe is that any police/sheriff's office or prosecutor's office would release this tape prior to Mr Paul having a trial. What this has done is simply made it impossible for Paul to have anything close to a fair trial.
WEAR is a news channel, not a court of law. Your argument that you must somehow support the charges against Paul by showing this tape are simply moronic. Your job is to report news, not to convict suspects prior to a legal trial. from Milton/FL by Cathy
Comment: I have no idea how old, or what his health problems are, or has been in the past, but I know mine. I failed a sobriety test in my doctor's office, and had to get a MRI, and I can't pass one at anytime. Personally, after watching it numerous times, I can't see how they arrested him, other than the highly inaccurate breathlizer test. Should have refused it. from Pensacola by Fred
Comment: Not only should the county superentendent of school set an example He should be watched to make sure he doesn't drive while licence suspended and should show him doing community service all are part of a DUI. After all he of all people should set an example. from Destin Fl. by Jeff
Comment: Yes the video was uncomfortable, but it was news to be reported. Mr. Paul can't be "protected" because of his status, airing the story, shows unbiased reporting. I do not feel the airing of the video was to further humiliate Mr. Paul. Parents such as my self can use this video as a tool to show and educate our children about, obeying the law, drunk driving, and not assuming to be above the law based on our "titles" in life. (I am NOT saying Mr Paul felt above the law, he was very cooperative and humble with the officer's requests) by Inga
Comment: He has admitted to the offence on t.v.and said he wasn't gonna run for office again.Enough is enough he has been humilated and been the talk of Escambia county. So I feel like he doesn't need this added to him.The media needs to learn some limits and boundaries. from ft walton beach by karen
Comment: Man is innocent until proven guilty. from Pensacola, FL by S.
Comment: By pleading not guilty to the dui charge, Mr. Paul made the video much more newsworthy. If he plead guilty, it would have been a moot point from pensacola, fl by MJ
Comment: I agree that it should have been broadcast because nobody has a problem with it unless it is someone who is well known the community. If it had me arrested nobody would mind seeing me in the paper or on the news. from pensacola, fla by angela
Comment: no i don't i think that it has went a little to far when this was air. he needs to get in trouble i agree but he didn't need all his business all over escambia county and i think and feel that my kids should not have had to see this knowing that he was once over them and there teaches. just let the local lawenforment handle this and not the news is what i think. by elizabeth
Comment: It's news; why would you not show it unless you're trying to help him hide a problem for which he clearly needs help. Had it been a teacher, would you have hesitated in showing the video? from Navarre by Teresa
Comment: I would also be interested in knowing if the credit card he was using to party on was a School Board Credit Card. He has been a good superintentdent and if he were running again, I would not rule out voting for him over this incident for we have ALL made mistakes. from Milton/ FL by Al
Comment: I believe Mr. Paul has been unjustly crucified by the local media. Imagine every time you committed an act of indiscretion (we all do), it was shown on the local television station. The rationale you provide is that he pleaded not guilty to the DUI charges. I'm sure he is following his attorney's advice. The only appropriate people to show this video to is to a jury. from Niceville, FL by Kim
Comment: I feel that Mr Paul is no better or different from anyone else and if you can report a story on anyone elso you can report a story on him. His position does not exclude him from exposed for breaking the law. Millions of peole are posted on the tv news and online for crimes they commit and Mr Paul is just another exanple. I feel that noone is exempt from being shown on the news for this type of activity expesially when they hold any position of authority. I believe that they should be exposed because they are supposed to set an example for our Youth. from Summerdale, Al by Jeff
Comment: and yes i do because when COACH WASHINGTON, a former WOODHAM HIGH SCHOOL basketball coach. Was arrested ya'll put it all over the news,in the news papers, and aint no telling where else ya'll put it. He lost his job and all and thats not right. Jim Paul still in office.THATS WRONG from pensacola,fl by cecily
Comment: Unfortunately, most within our country no longer believes in accountability nor utilizes any type of rational thought process before opening ones mouth or performing any action. It appears some are more focused on the showing of the video tape than the real issue. For one to make statements such as, “Bad judgment by your staff... very poor taste... trying to humiliate him and you're exploiting the situation” fully supports my first sentence. Jim Paul is Escambia School Superintendent and is a direct reflection of you, since he is an elected official, and your school system. What message are you sending the children, faculty, and everyone else when you make statements such as, “trying to humiliate him and you’re exploiting the situation”? Once again, my first sentence is fully supported. from Crestview, FL by John
Comment: I think it was a great thing to run the video and let them see what he is denying. He has done nothing but say one thing after another and this very clearly shows what "actually" happened and there's not denying that!! from Milton by Chrissy
Comment: No. I think it was very, very poor judgment on the part of WEAR-3 to air that segment. There is such a thing as "invasion of privacy" vs. "a matter of public record". The tape aired, should be a matter of public record as soon as the police are through with it. As a matter of public record, anyone wishing to view it can through legal channels. The whole world can HEAR that a school superintendant was stopped for DUI, but the whole world is not entitled (nor should they be) to see it (the arrest) on tape. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom
Comment: It was not necessary. It was a very poor decision to air the video. No new news there. from Gulf Breeze, FL by Jim
Comment: I think it was a good decision to show the video of Jim Paul...seeing that he did plea "not guilty"....the video speeks for itself....good job WEARTV3 from pensacola by tim
Comment: As with any person in a position that has great influence on the community, any and all stories that shed a negative impact should be made public. Citizens have a right to know all the facts to make a informed decision concerning future elections. from Crestview, FL by Lynn
Comment: Yes, it should have been released. He is a "Public Figure", and elected to serve the people. He and all other Escambia County elected officails should set an example, not get arrested for D.U.I. or Hunting eithout a License out of season, which by the way is a Felony, not a civil matter. from Pensacola by James
Comment: ABSOLUTELY!!! It is relevant and necessary. If Mr.Paul was innocent,he'd want this to be shown. If he were guilty,he wouldnt want this shown. His racist "KARMA" has caught up w/ him. from pensacola florida by kelli
Comment: No I don't think it should have been showing, because he's already filling embarssed enough from Pensacola,Fl by Bravewolf
Comment: absolutely, he has commited a crime. if any other puplic service official had commited the crime then the same thing should be done. we pay these people and should expect responsible behavior. from Pensacola, FL by Anna
Comment: you made the right decision from pensacola, fl by lisa
Comment: Public figures must bear
Public scrutiny. Only innocen-
ce protects. from Pensacola, Florida by Robin
Comment: I am aprreciative of the coverage and airing of the video of Jim Paul. He is to be held to the highest of standards and he clearly demonstrated that he is NOT fit for the job. He should do the county and himself and family a favor and resign. by GINGER
Comment: I missed it. Have been out of town since the 14th. Play it again!!!! from Pensacola, FL by Carol
Comment: Jim Paul,is no better than anyone eles. How, many times has he drove while drinking? I'am glab the law got him off the road before he had the kill someone. from Jay,Fl. by Barbara
Comment: bad bad choice from pens/fl by joey
Comment: "If you don't want to be in the news, don't make news." David Brinkley from Pace, FL by Millard
Comment: I think the video of Jim Pauls arrest SHOULD be aired. He is a very public figure for our children as well as our community so what he does in his private life is reflected on our community. I feel if it is ok for WEAR to show videos of other arrests than in all fairness his should be shown as well. Jim Paul new that he would be in the public eye so he should have made a better decision not to drink and drive! from pensacola, fl by brandy
Comment: Yes he is working for all people of county from Pensacola Fl by Bernice
Comment: Arrest Records, Court Transcripts, Booking Paperwork are all PUBLIC RECORDS. They are open to the Public. Jim Paul is a County Employee and our kids are entrusted to his guidance, so he life should be open to the Public. from Lillian AL by Ted
Comment: we pay his salary. All teachers and elected officals shoud be accountable. from pensacola, fl. 32503 by mary
Comment: YES; He is setting an example for children as he is over all school teachers. and children. from Pensacola Fl by Bernice
Comment: I believe the video should be shown to every one he was aressted for a DUI and he should have no privacy he is a superentendint for escambia county and he abused alcohol from Holt/Fl by TJ
Comment: I don't believe channel 3 has broadcasted DUI arrest videos on regular residents in the past. I believe someone in upper management at Channel 3 just wanted to add more embarassment to Mr Paul.
News sells from Fwb, Fl by Paul
Comment: I think everyone makes misteasks and no ones perfect. every one deserves a 2nd chance from pace, Fl by elroy
Comment: I think its typical of the type of reporting WEAR is known for. The lack of quality reporting is very evident.
from MILTON by Daniel
Comment: Of course it should have been broadcast! That was obvious to me even before I read your excellent reasons above. I didn't enjoy seeing it either, but it explains more than any other reporting could have. Good job. from Pensacola, FL by Terry
Comment: while I feel he should be punished sternly, public humiliation was unnecessary.
You went through a lot of trouble to acquire it, and appeared to be quite anxious. from gulf breeze, fl by elizabeth
Comment: Seeing the video lets the people see for themselves that Jim Paul was drunk, and
should have been taken off the streets.
I also feel like Jim Paul is trying to insult my intelligence in telling his story about '2 drinks'.
The man should admit to what he has done and pay the penalty. from Cantonment, FL by Al
Comment: I feel as much is given much is required during the Clinton presidential Investigation he was being held to the same standards why is Jim Paul any different he is still an elected official from Pensacola / Florida by Nehemiah
Comment: Yes I do think it should be shown,he is no diffrent than me or you !!!! from Pensacola by Jeff
Comment: He hasn’t been to trial yet. If he had been and been convicted, then I could understand you showing it, but not before.
Have you tried to do the things he was asked to do? After watching the tape I tried. No drugs or alcohol in my system yet I had a small problem with walking that line and there was no way I could stand on one foot like he had to do. That scares me…. If I get stopped does that mean I’d be arrested?
I’m ashamed of channel 3 for using Yellow Journalism.
from Cantonment by Freda
Comment: Mr. Paul was a wonderful teacher at Escambia High School when both of my daughters attended. He had an open door policy and the kids were comfortable talking to him when some could not talk to their parents. I was glad to see him in the position of school Superintendent although I didn't think that he played games like others on the school board and figured that would hurt him. Jim Paul is an outstanding educator and will be a great loss. That being said, I feel that he has paid dearly for his lapse in judgement. It is a mark on the community that each of us has one - and only one chance to be an upstanding citizen. Mr. Paul did not come to work impaired nor did he, at any time, participate in his work day while being impaired. He is being held to higher standards that even the people judging him are not held to. Showing that video is just rubbing it in his face. And you can talk about playing favorites or protecting someone but after all Mr. Paul has had to endure so far I think your lapse in judgement was unfair. It was an issue that was tabled and your showing of the video just brought it back into bad light. Someone on your staff has a vindictive nature about them. If you respect him so much then let "sleeping dogs lie". He has to live here too. from Cantonment, FL by Barbara
Comment: glad someone in escambia county has the guts to show the truth humiliation went out the window with his childish judgement when he lied about being drunk you had every right to show the truth a picture is worth a 1000 words! keep up the good work wear!!! Maybe with you on our side we can get pensacola politics cleaned up! power to the little people! and I am very proud of the officers who did their jobs that night hats off to them!!!
